You're a Lucky Guy
Saul Chaplin & Sammy Cahn • 1939
A late Cahn and Chaplin collaboration from the final year of their partnership, this swinging number attracted an extraordinary roster of interpreters almost immediately — Sammy Kaye, Billie Holiday, and Louis Armstrong all recording it within a year of its publication.
The fact that both Holiday and Armstrong — two of the most distinctive voices in jazz history — were drawn to the same Cahn lyric says everything about the song’s quality. A minor gem from the twilight of one of Tin Pan Alley’s most productive early partnerships.
