The Look of Love

Jimmy Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn • 1964

A sophisticated torch song from Sinatra’s 1964 album Softly As I Leave You, not to be confused with the more famous Bacharach and David song of the same name from 1967. Cahn’s lyric is characteristically precise — the look of love is something you recognize rather than describe, and he trusts the listener to feel what he doesn’t spell out.

One of the overlooked gems of the Cahn and Van Heusen catalog, its relative obscurity making discovery all the more rewarding.
