The Second Star to the Right
Sammy Fain & Sammy Cahn • 1953
The opening title song for Disney’s 1953 animated classic Peter Pan, sung by an offscreen chorus as the camera drifts through a night sky toward Neverland. Cahn and Fain — one of Hollywood’s most decorated songwriting partnerships of the era — distilled J.M. Barrie’s entire spirit of childhood wonder into two verses and a chorus.
The melody was originally written for Alice in Wonderland before being repurposed for Peter Pan — a happy accident that gave the world one of Disney’s most magical opening moments.
