Rhythm Is Our Business

Saul Chaplin & Sammy Cahn • 1935

The song that started it all. Written when Cahn and Chaplin were barely in their twenties, “Rhythm Is Our Business” became the theme song of the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra — one of the great swing bands of the era — and gave the duo their first significant professional foothold in the music business.

A statement of intent as much as a song, its title could serve as the motto for Cahn’s entire sixty-year career.
