My Kind of Town

Jimmy Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn • 1964

Written for the 1964 Rat Pack film Robin and the 7 Hoods, this love letter to Chicago earned Cahn and Van Heusen an Academy Award nomination. Sinatra performed it as a concert staple for the rest of his career, and it became Chicago’s unofficial anthem — a city-song in the grand tradition of “New York, New York.”

Cahn always said he was proudest of “Call Me Irresponsible,” but “My Kind of Town” may be his most beloved — a song so completely identified with one city and one voice that it’s impossible to imagine either without the other.
