Love and Marriage

Jimmy Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn • 1955

Written for the 1955 NBC television production of Our Town, “Love and Marriage” won Cahn the first Emmy Award ever given for an individual song. Sinatra’s recording reached #3 on the Billboard charts and became one of his most recognizable performances.

The song enjoyed a remarkable second life when it was adopted as the theme for the television series Married… with Children (1987–1997), introducing it to an entirely new generation — and giving Cahn’s wry observation about matrimony a deliciously ironic new context.
