Look to Your Heart

Jimmy Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn • 1955

Written for the 1955 NBC television production of Our Town, this quiet, reflective number was overshadowed by its more celebrated sibling “Love and Marriage” from the same broadcast. But it’s a beautiful song in its own right — Cahn’s lyric urging the kind of honest self-examination that romantic love demands.

Sinatra’s recording is characteristically understated, the restraint making it all the more affecting. Sarah Vaughan’s 1963 Snowbound reading shows the song’s deeper jazz potential — her three-octave range finding colors in the melody that few singers could reach.
