I'll Only Miss Her When I Think of Her

Jimmy Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn • 1965

From Cahn and Van Heusen’s 1965 Broadway musical Skyscraper, this wry torch song became one of the show’s standout numbers. Sinatra’s recording gave it a life well beyond the stage, his delivery nailing the song’s comic-yet-genuine heartache perfectly.

The title’s clever double negative — denial masking real feeling — is Cahn at his most economical and most human. Harry Connick Jr.’s 2001 recording, featuring Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, stretches the song to nearly nine minutes of intimate late-night jazz.
