If It's the Last Thing I Do

Saul Chaplin & Sammy Cahn • 1937

One of the earliest Cahn and Chaplin collaborations, written when both men were barely in their twenties and hustling songs to the big bandleaders of the day. Tommy Dorsey’s 1937 recording gave it its first major exposure, but the song proved durable enough to attract Sinatra two decades later for his 1957 album Close to You.

Thelma Houston’s 1976 recording showed it could survive yet another stylistic reinvention — a testament to the strength of Cahn’s lyric across very different eras and genres.
