Saul Chaplin & Sammy Cahn • 1937
An early Cahn and Chaplin collaboration from 1937, this gentle swing-era ballad was one of several songs the duo placed with top bandleaders during their Tin Pan Alley years. Andy Kirk’s version with vocalist Pha Terrell was among the first recordings.
Ella Fitzgerald’s recording with The Mills Brothers is the most enduring version — a reminder that even in his earliest work, Cahn’s lyrics had the warmth and directness that great singers gravitate toward.
